Swedish media have covered the news of the assassination of the 28-year-old Albanian Mario Majollari who has been refused asylum in the Scandinavian country. Majollari had applied for asylum and returned to his country after his request was rejected. He was shot dead outside his dwelling place in the Kinostudio area in Tirana.

“He always said they’d find and shoot him”, said Anders Hedqvist, the manager of the asylum place where Majollari stayed while his request was processing. According to the Swedish media, he applied in May 2014.

The Swedish authorities concluded Majollari did not need any kind of defense, despite the fact he said repeatedly he was threatened after his father was arrested. In August 2015, the Board of Migration rejected his asylum request.

Mario appealed the decision, but it was rejected too, two days before Christmas the same year. He made a request in the Supreme Court of Migration, which was also rejected and he returned to Abania in May 2016, according to Swedish media reports.

“He was notified about the refusal of asylum and said he could not stay in Albania and had to go to another country to work”, Anders Hedqvist said. The manager added he had helped Mario to find different jobs while his application was in process and kept contacts with him on Facebook. Later, he said, he learned from a common friend Mario was murdered.

The media in Sweden have been interested for the decision of refusing the Majollari’s asylum request. According to the published details, the Court of Migration in Gothenburg decided to reject the request because his testimony was not found trustworthy and they did not believe there was a real threat for Mario in Albania.

The Court’s decision was based on the information from Albania, making the judge reach the conclusion that “despite the current shortcomings, the judiciary system in Albania can offer protection for vengeance conflicts”.

A spokesperson of the Board of Migration, Irene Sokolow, says what happened in Tirana is tragic. Majollari’s lawyer Maravgi Staifo added: “Unfortunately, you did not believe him and thought he could have protection in Albania. This is a clear proof Mario was right in his claims, but unfortunately you rejected him”. “I am truly sad about what happened. This is extremely tragic”, Irene Sokolow said.
