Incumbent President of Albania Bujar Nishani believes his successor Ilir Meta will be a president of the political balances, despite being elected only with the votes of the governing majority in the parliament. Talking to Kosovo journalist Berat Bushala for the Express newspaper, Nishani said Meta’s election was legal, because “the Constitution defines the way of electing the President, the rounds and the number of votes and not necessarily the presence of the opposition”.

Nishani, who also was elected in similar conditions, without the then Socialist opposition, says he would have liked for the opposition to be present in his election, because it gives credibility to the image of the country.

“This has become a repeated political culture, not as much as a contradiction to the candidate as for political goals of the parties for the moment. Maybe it’s the time to revise it in this context and avoid it in the future, going towards the elections of the President of Albania directly from the people”, Nishani suggested.

Buzhala reminded that the Socialist opposition, now the majority, accepted Nishani’s election as the time passed by. Will it happen with Meta as well; will he be accepted by the Democratic Party and become a President of the unity?

“I think that depends on two things”, Nishani responded. “First, it depends from the political position of the opposition and the Democratic Party, which I do not assume to say what it will be. It’s up to the PD chairman and institutions. Second, it will depend from the institutional performance of the elected president, Mr. Meta”.

“Mr. Meta has a long political experience and he has shown an approach to the equilibrium and pacification, so I believe Mr. Meta will continue to be like this in the position of the President too. However, much will depend on how the situation will be after (the elections of) June 18th”.
