The massive emigration is not the only index of Albanians losing hope to live in their own country. Another statistic published recently by the World Bank confirms the Albanian society is in depression. According to WB rapport, Albania is the European country with the highest number of suicides but Ukraine, which is a country in a war situation.

The number of suicides in Albania in 2014 was 4 for every 100 thousand inhabitants. Only Ukraine had a higher number, 4.4, with the figure being much lower for all the other European countries.

In the Balkans region, Montenegro followed Albania with 3.6 persons who committed suicide for every 100 thousands inhabitants, in Serbia and Bosnia the number was 1.3 and Croatia 0.8. Greece was the last, with only 0.1 suicides for every 100 thousands inhabitants.

Suicides number in Albania has increased especially in the last three years, because of the economic crisis, but also of the state’s repression on the families, which started with the action for electric power bills and the one against informality.

12 persons decided to end their lives only because of debts to OSHEE from the start of action for unpaid power bills. Qamil Zela was the first victim, who hanged himself in the detention cell, where he was detained for a debt of 3200 Lek to the Energy Distribution Operator (OSHEE).

The suicides went on with Arif Doda, Klajdi Muça, Llazar Nasi, Gjovalin Gjini and many other chiefs of family, who ended their lives tragically because they could not pay debts to OSHEE.

The suicides have continued intensively in the last month. No further than this Wednesday a woman, 35, jumped from the seventh floor. This is only the latest in a long series of suicides, which witnesses that misery and bad government have sunk Albania in depression.
