Former President Bujar Nishani has asked for Albania’s motives for the vote pro UN resolution, going against US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Nishani says there is no believable official reason why Albania opposed a permanent strategic ally as the United States.

“Albania positioned itself politically against the United States in UN. This is not merely a wrong position, but a serious and aware damage to our strategic interests”, Nishani writes.

“First, one must be clear of two things. By one hand, the United States recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and will relocate their embassy there. This is their sovereign right and no one can judge or change it. This is not an obligatory decision for the other countries, which also have their sovereign rights to keep their embassies where they want to. By the other hand, the UN Resolution cannot change the sovereign decision of the United States. But what was that for?

The Resolution was political sponsoring against the United States as a single pole of global diplomatic power. The votes “pro” the political stance come for many different motives by different countries. They vary from the fundamental enmity against the United States to the interests of internal politic battles in certain countries and also to the competition for multi-polarization in the global influence chessboard”.

“What I cannot find out is Albania’s motive for this anti-US positioning”, Nishani writes.

“Two theses that circulate clandestinely in the pro-government media are easily dropped down. The first one is the unification with EU position and, second, the position against President Turmp as an individual”.

“The European Union had no unified and declared position related to the decision of the US Administration to move its embassy. By the other hand, President Trump represents the United States of America, the US Administration and the American People. His decision is bringing to life what Presidents Bush and Obama worked for and promised and what was voted as a Resolution by the US Congress, long before President Trump was elected”.

“Albania’s vote has damaged the strategic interest of Albanians for consolidation, development and prosperity. It gave an anti-Albanian argument to our enemies”.
