Democratic Party chairman Lulzim Basha has appealed to Premier Edi Rama’s Socialist majority to back off from the election of the interim General Prosecutor.

The Albanian parliament has gathered today to elect the interim General Prosecutor with the votes of the majority only.

Basha warned this is the day when the majority must back off from the anti-constitutional voting and obey to the people.

“Today is one of the most dramatic days for this parliament and for the 27-year-old democracy. In a flagrant violation of the Constitution, the parliamentary majority is trying to take an illegitimate power, which is forbidden to the majority even to touch or approach”, Basha said in the parliament today.

“This is an anti-Constitutional session. In an insidious way, you are preparing a coup. For centuries, Europe and the United States have clearly sanctioned the separation of powers as a foundation stone of democracy”.

“This is the reason why the Constitute of Albania and the Judicial Reform forbid the election of the General Prosecutor from a single political force. The articles are clear and we have warned you for this”, Basha said.

“Do not block the investigations over (former IM) Saimir Tahiri, (Mayor of Durrës) Vangjush Dako, (Mayor of Elbasan) Qazim Sejdini, and the corruption files for other ministers. You seem determined to protect your corruption. This is your last chance, back off. Obey to the people or else you’ll face the consequences”.
